Washgintonia Palm

  • Family: Arecaceae
  • Name: Washingtonia robusta
  • Origin: Southwestern United States and Northwestern Mexico
  • Other Names: Mexican Fan Palm, Skyduster.

The Washingtonia palm is a tall tree, typically 40 to 50 feet, but can grow up to 80 feet. Known for its straight trunk, it’s a common street palm. The dead lower fronds form a dense, shaggy covering, earning it the name petticoat palm. However, these fronds are a fire hazard and a rodent nesting site, requiring removal by law in some areas.

The palm thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, is drought-tolerant, and needs minimal watering once established. Use inorganic mulch like pebbles to keep the soil dry. Fertilize with a general-purpose fertilizer every one to two years. Despite the frond removal hassle, its rapid growth and statuesque look make it a perfect choice for low-water landscaping.
