“Show me a country with a strong agricultural base, and I’ll show you a strong nation.” These words, simple yet profound, encapsulate the significance that agriculture held for the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, may he rest in peace, as it was considered a top priority for development in the nascent state. Even before the establishment of the union, during his tenure as the representative of the ruler in Al Ain, and later as the ruler of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, he directed much of his efforts towards the development of agriculture, reclaiming new
lands, and rehabilitating and renovating the falaj systems used for irrigation.

With the advancement of time and the evolution of technology, agriculture in the Emirates has witnessed a significant shift towards modern and sustainable farming practices. Modern irrigation techniques such as drip and sprinkler irrigation systems have been adopted to enhance water efficiency and productivity. Additionally, genetically advanced crops that are resistant to harsh weather conditions and diseases have been introduced to promote environmental sustainability and achieve food security in the region.

Initiatives such as vertical farming projects, greenhouse farming projects, and investments in smart agriculture technologies like hydroponics and solar-powered farming are considered part of the UAE’s efforts towards enhancing food security and achieving environmental sustainability.

Among the prominent aspects of agricultural development in the Emirates is the role of palm tree cultivation, expansion of green spaces, and tree planting.

The UAE witnesses ongoing efforts to expand green spaces and plant more trees and plants. This is achieved through projects aimed at increasing city green areas and providing spaces for recreation and leisure for citizens and visitors. Green expansion efforts also include the organization of public parks and gardens, as well as the establishment of projects to provide shade and a comfortable atmosphere in urban environments.

In general, the advancements in agriculture in the Emirates reflect a comprehensive shift towards adopting advanced and sustainable technologies to meet the needs of the population and contribute to achieving economic and environmental stability in the region.
